Tanzania extractive sector projects

Operating mines

Tanzania has a number of major mining projects in operation, as well as very extensive areas under exploration license. To date, Canadian operations in Tanzania have centred on gold, but a number of junior companies have entered the region, and have secured prospecting and exploration licenses. Below is a list of mining companies currently operating in the country.

Barrick Gold (Canada) – One of the world’s largest gold producers, Barrick has extensive presence in Tanzania. Projects owned by Barrick are: Bulyanhulu Mine; Buzwagi Mine; North Mara Mine. Barrick is a 70% owner of the joint venture Tulawaka Mine, with Montreal-based MDN Inc. Finally, Barrick is a 50% owner of the Kabanga advanced-stage joint venture, operated by Xstrata.

Great Basin Gold Ltd. (USA)– GBG Rusaf Gold exploration project. As part of its 2008 acquisition of Rusaf Gold and the three properties associated with the project, Great Basin has committed to spending US $7-20 million in exploration activity over 3 years.

Resolute Mining Ltd. (Australia) – 100% owner of the Golden Pride gold mine

AngloGold Ashanti (South Africa) – owner and operator of the Geita mine

TanzaniteOne (South Africa)– World’s largest Tanzanite producer, holding mining license to Block C of the four Tanzanite mining blocks as demarcated by the Tanzanian government in 1990.

Petra Diamonds (South Africa) – 75% owner and operator of the Mwadui Williamson Mine

GlencoreXstrata (Australia) – 50% owner and operator of the Kabanga nickel project, 50% owned by Barrick Gold.

Kiwira Coal Mine (Tanzania) – previously owned by the Tanzanian government, the mine was privatized and sold in 2005 to a company formed by ex-president Benjamin Mkapa and his senior cabinet minister Daniel Yona.

Exploration and junior companies

IMX Resources (Australia) – 100% owner of the Nachingwea exploration project

IAMGOLD (Canada) – Previously engaged in exploration activity at the Buckreef and Kitongo projects, IAMGOLD had ceased its Tanzanian operations in late 2009, and control over the properties was returned to the Tanzanian government.

Lakota Resources (Canada) – a junior Canadian company emerging from a bankruptcy restructuring. The company’s Dec. 2 press release stated that “[g]oing forward, Lakota will focus on assessing the status of its operations in Tanzania and Canada, seeking sources of additional financing, bringing itself into compliance with its public company reporting obligations (including the completion of outstanding financial statements) and working to remove the cease trade order to which the Company is subject.” No company site at this time.

Shanta Gold Limited (Guernsey) – sole owner of four early-stage exploration projects in Tanzania: Chunya; Mgusu; Singida; Songea.

African Eagle Resources plc. (UK) – an exploration company holding licenses to four areas in Tanzania: Dutwa (nickel Laterite); Miyabi (gold); Zanzui (nickel Laterite, palladium); and Igurubi (gold) 

Randgold Resources (UK) – the company has suspended exploration activities in Tanzania, and is in the process of returning the exploration licenses to the government.

Uranex (Australia) – a Uranium exploration company, holding 100% interest licenses in three projects in Tanzania: Bahi; Manyoni; and Mkuju/Songea.

Indago Resources (Australia) – a gold exploration company with three properties in Tanzania: Nyanzaga (in joint venture with Barrick Exploration Africa); Kahama; and Nayakafuru (in joint venture with Resolute Mining Ltd.) 

Savannah Diamonds (UK) – a diversified exploration company with 70,000 sq. Km. in exploration licenses in Tanzania.

TANZOZ Exploration (Tanzania) – an exploration company in very early stages of operation

Mantra Resources (Australia) – a Uranium exploration company with five properties at varying stages of exploration activity: Mkuju River; Bahi North; Mbamba Bay; Regional Karoo Targets; and Handa.

Orca Exploration (British Virgin Islands) – a natural gas producer, focusing on the Songo Songo offshore gas field
