Jim Franklin is a consulting geologist with over 35 years of experience in the study of mineral deposits and regional metallogeny. He is a graduate of Carleton University (B.Sc., M.Sc) and the University of Western Ontario (Ph.D.). After teaching at Lakehead University, and consulting for Noranda Inc., he joined the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) in 1975, where he directed major research programs on gold deposits in the southern Churchill Province, as well as VMS deposits in the Churchill and Superior provinces. He also coordinated the marine minerals program from1975 to 1993. As chief geoscientist from 1993 until 1997, he was responsible for coordinating GSC's entire scientific program.

Currently, he is a director or science advisor of six exploration companies and sits on numerous boards for professional and scientific groups. His consulting work is focused on new discoveries of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, orogenic and porphyry-style gold in Precambrian terrains, magmatic nickel-copper sulphides and various types of uranium deposits.

Jim Franklin has just retired as co-editor of CIM's Exploration and Mining Geology journal. He previously was awarded CIM's A.O. Dufresne Award and the Julian Boldy Memorial Award. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a registered professional geologist in the Province of Ontario, and an adjunct professor at Queen's, Laurentian and Ottawa universities. He is a past president of both the Geological Association of Canada and the Society of Economic Geologists. He has published over 125 papers and book chapters, and over 150 abstracts.

member since 1975, he was president of CIM for 2005-2006. Russell is currently the president and CEO of Taseko Mines Limited, a British Columbian-headquartered copper and molybdenum producer.
