In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the metallurgical industry, both nationally and internationally, in the areas of process understanding and optimization, and for his continuing leadership of the metallurgical profession.
John Carrington, vice chairman and chief operating officer, and a director of Barrick Gold Corporation, joined Barrick in early 1995 as executive vice president, operations, was named chief operating officer in 1996 assuming responsibility for all of Barrick's mining operations, and Vice Chairman in 1999. Mr. Carrington has had extensive experience in operations management and has held executive positions with a number of major mining companies during his career.
Prior to joining Barrick, Mr. Carrington was President and C.E.O. of Noranda Mining and Exploration Inc.
Mr. Carrington graduated with distinction from the University of Toronto in 1966 with a Bachelor of Applied Science Degree and received his Master's Degree in mining engineering from McGill University in 1968.
His professional affiliations include being Past Chairman of the Mining Association of Canada, a past director of The Gold Institute, Chairman of Prospectors and Developers Association Mining Matters (the educational outreach program of the PDAC), a member of the Advisory Committee to the Lassonde Mineral Engineering Program at the University of Toronto, and a member of the Canadian Mineral Industry Education Foundation. Professional memberships include the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario, the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the Society of Mining Engineers.
