Garston H. Blackwell was born and educated in Cornwall, United Kingdom, and graduated from the Camborne School of Mines in 1968. After working as a mining engineer for Falconbridge in Sudbury for three years, he attended Queen's University at Kingston, graduating with an M.Sc.(Eng.) in 1973, and immediately joined Brenda Mines in British Columbia as senior mining engineer.
Blackwell has worked on numerous projects with the Noranda Group, and became chief engineer at Brenda in 1978. In 1986 he joined Queen's University and teaches open pit mining, ore reserve estimation and grade control, mine feasibility, computer applications, and surveying. He is a full professor, and has taken extended industrial leaves with Barrick in Nevada and IMDI in Antofagasta, Chile.
Blackwell is president of Great Condurrow Mining and Exploration Inc., a CIM Fellow, a member of the APEO, APEGBC, IMM, SME, and a Chartered Engineer.
