In recognition of his significant countribution and in particular his tireless efforts as President and Past President of CIM to enhance CIM's image and prestige both nationally and internationally by way of its centennial celebrations.
Giorgio Massobrio retired in December 1994 as chairman of the Board of Quebec Cartier Mining, where he was president from 1980 to 1992. He later served as honorary chairman from 1994 to 1996. He was vice-president of Met-Chem from 1977 to 1979. Prior to joining Met-Chem, he was associated with Italsider, an Italian firm where he was executive vice-president and a member of the firms Management Committee and Board of Directors.
A graduate in electrical engineering from the University of Genoa and the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program, Mr. Massobrio began his association with Italsider in 1951, receiving special training in the United States the following year. He was made superintendent of operations in 1959. Subsequently, he rose to become executive vice-president in 1971.
A member of CIM and the AIME, the American Iron and Steel Institute, and the American Management Association, he has been a member of the Board of Governors of Le Conseil du Patronat in Montreal, a director of the Mining Association of Canada, and has served as a director of the Italian Metallurgical Association. He has written several technical papers on open hearth and basic oxygen steel-making and on the use of computers for production control and management information systems. He received the INCO Medal in 1989, in recognition of his leadership role in the iron mining and steel industries. He was CIM President, 1995-1996, general chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Centennial Annual General Meeting, and was vice-chairman of the CIM Centennial Corporation.
