Barlow Memorial Medal Origin

Barlow Memorial Medal

In 1916, a group of his Institute friends established a trust to provide, as a memorial to the late Alfred Ernest Barlow, D.Sc., F.R.S.C., President of the Institute for the term 1912-1914 and distinguished for his contributions to our knowledge of Precambrian geology, a prize for the best paper on economic geology published by the Institute in any year.

The awards, initially cash prizes, later were changed to silver medals supplemented by cash prizes, but since 1941 have taken the form of a handsome gold medal.
