Edmonton 2008 Highlights

CIM's 2008 Conference recently brought together respected mining industry representatives and experts from across Canada and abroad to examine what mining companies are doing, and what they could be doing, to ensure a strong and sustainable future and stay at the top of their game.

Take a virtual visit of the conference, the exhibition and the Mining in Society show.

Renowned Canadian broadcaster, Rex Murphy helped kick-start the three-day technical program by moderating a plenary session featuring an eminent panel of industry leaders. Murphy's personal brand of humour and stealth wit helped bring some levity to a very serious discussion of the issues surrounding sustainability in the mining and minerals industry.

Among the five distinguished speakers was Don Lindsay, president and CEO of Teck Cominco, who emphasized the importance of educating the public about the value of what the mining industry does and dispelling misconceptions. Glenn Nolan, Chief of the Missanabie First Nation, called upon industry to develop policies on fair hiring practices, community development and procurement that would encourage participation by aboriginals. De Beers Canada president and CEO - and newly appointed CIM president - Jim Gowans emphasized the key role to be played by early education and spoke of his company's dedication to leaving a positive lasting legacy in the communities in which they operate, most notably with First Nations.

Participants agree that the Edmonton conference offered a stellar program well-worth the attendance.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the CIM Exhibition is the top minerals industry trade show in the country. Booth space at the Exhibition sold out nine months ago and over 70 per cent of attendees have already renewed for the 2009 CIM Exhibition in Toronto. A steady flow of traffic during the event and positive post-show feedback added up for a successful event.

 SOCIAL ACTIVITIES >> View Gallery

CIM offered plenty of opportunities to conference delegates to unwind and get to know one another in a more relaxed and social environment. These opportunities included: the lobster dinner, the Komatsu opening reception, the P&H reception and dance, the daily cocktail on the show floor, the student industry luncheon, and the Caterpillar awards gala.

MINING IN SOCIETY & CAREER FAIR >> View Gallery

The Mining in Society show that ran prior to the conference from May 2 to 4, was targeted towards the general public and geared at developing an appreciation and understanding of mining, while promoting career opportunities in the industry. It attracted numerous schools within the area and created much excitement among the visitors. School teachers appreciated the hands-on nature of the exhibit and the interactive Amazing Mine Challenge was a definite hit. Meanwhile, many of the Career Fair exhibitors praised the quality and quantity of visitors who came to explore job opportunities in the mining sector and felt confident that the event would prove useful in addressing their labour shortage challenges.

Mining in Society will be back in 2009 and will showcase more contributions the mining industry makes in our day-to-day life and its exciting career opportunities.
