Robert Schafer is currently vice-president, business development for Hunter Dickinson Inc., a private natural resources corporation.
Robert Schafer managed BHP
From 1996-2002, Robert Schafer was the vice-president, exploration for Kinross Gold. He held senior exploration management positions with BHP World Minerals and Billiton Exploration during the 1980s and early 1990s.
Schafer has worked in the Russian Far East, southern Africa, South America and Australia. His work has included the structuring and implementation of successful exploration strategies, project reviews and valuations leading to acquisitions and the management of local and expatriate exploration teams operating in a wide variety of geologic environments.
Robert Schafer serves on boards of PDAC and SME
Currently, Robert Schafer is the past-president of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME), where he was also recognized as a "Distinguished Member."
Robert Schafer is a past-president of the Geological Society of Nevada, a former councilor for the Society of Economic Geologists and a former trustee for the Northwest Mining Association.
Robert Schafer wins AIME medal
Schafer served on a committee of the National Research Council on geologic data preservation. In 2002, Robert Schafer received the AIME William Lawrence Saunders Gold Medal for career achievements.
Schafer completed his undergraduate and graduate degrees in geology and mineral economics at Miami University (Ohio) and the University of Arizona.
