John Dutrizac, MetSoc Past President (1983-1984), passed peacefully with family present on Monday, April 1, 2019, after a battle with cancer. John had an outstanding career with achievements in research and developments as a metallurgist, receiving numerous national and international awards for his work. He had a distinguished career as a research scientist at CANMET and has published over 200 technical papers dealing with the leaching of sulfide minerals, the electro-refining of copper and the processing of zinc, especially the iron control problem associated with zinc hydrometallurgy. He was a recognized authority on jarosite precipitation technology and the properties of jarosite-type compounds.

John is considered one of the “fathers” of the Copper-Cobre conference series and has contributed significantly to its success. A 2007 symposium was named in his honour. One of his major efforts has been to promote co-operation within the industry and between the industrial and academic communities. He joined CIM in 1967 and has been a Life Member since 2010.

John’s passing will be felt by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
