2013-07-24Multi-stakeholder workshop reinforces industry stakeholder engagement efforts

The Environmental and Social Responsibility Society of CIM and the Centre for Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) have pooled resources to hold stakeholder engagement activities at the World Mining Congress (WMC), which is to be held in Montreal this August 11 to 15. The activities, which will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on August 11 will consist of a multi-stakeholder engagement dialogues session and an activity to facilitate partnership opportunities between industry and NGOs.


2013-07-08COSMO Stochastic Mine Planning Laboratory focuses on global asset optimization under uncertainty

On June 20, 45 industry professionals and academics from across the globe gathered at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, to hear about the latest findings of the COSMO Stochastic Laboratory researchers at COSMO’s biannual Technical Day. Canada Research Chair in Sustainable Mineral Resource Development and Optimization under Uncertainty, with the support of six mining industry partners, aims to optimize mineral resource development under uncertain conditions by applying mathematical models and risk analysis to mine planning, design and production scheduling. This year, the focus was on global asset optimization of open-pit mining complexes.

The Global Mining and Standards Group (GMSG) joined forces with the Earth Moving Equipment Safety Round Table (EMESRT) to host “Innovative Solutions to Drive a Safer Mining Workplace through Technology” a workshop focused on both groups recent efforts to establish technology standards for improving mining equipment safety and performance.

CIM Distinguished Lecturer Philip Thwaites brought his expertise on automation of process control to mining professionals in Peru, through three Distinguished Lecturer presentations held from May 29 to 31. Thwaites, who is currently manager of the process control group at the Xstrata Process Support Centre, presented, “Manual control, process automation – or operational performance excellence? What is the difference?”

More than 2,500 students and teachers took part in this year’s Mining for Society show, which took place May 2 to 4 in the exhibition hall of the Queen Elizabeth hotel. The interactive event showcased the important role mined minerals play in everyday life, while also educating students and the general public about the mining cycle.

2013-05-17$5.1M NSERC grant to fund collaborative research project

On May 14, Gary Goodyear, Canada’s minister of state for science and technology, announced that the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) presented the collaborative, nationwide research initiative, dubbed the “Footprints project,” with a $5.1-million grant – the largest ever awarded to date. The project will pool resources from industry, academia and government to develop new tools for remotely sensing and assessing mineral deposits far below the surface based on their subtle signals, or footprints.

Experts at the fifth annual Management and Finance Day, held on May during the 2013 CIM Convention in Toronto, addressed complex and overlooked issues, and provided helpful advice to developers who can sometimes be caught unaware. The event, organized by CIM’s Management and Economics Society (MES), brought together mining professionals from a range of disciplines, including engineering and business, to discuss finance issues the industry faces.
