BC's Mining Industry: Pedal to the Metal?

Michael R. McPhie

In his second major annual address to the Vancouver Board of Trade, Michael McPhie, President and CEO, Mining Association of BC, will discuss the important issues facing the mining and minerals industry in British Columbia.

"The BC mining and minerals industry has grown to generate more than $5 billion in gross revenues in 2005 and 2006 looks to like it may be even stronger. Employment is up, there are some 25 major development projects under consideration around the province representing billions of dollars in new investment potential and the emerging markets of Asia continue to fuel a strong demand for commodities produced in BC. But is the industry and government doing enough to realize the industries true potential? The flat world all businesses face today, the need for a social licence to operate, the involvement of Aboriginal Peoples in all major resource development projects and the emerging middle classes of India and China have profound implications for the future of the mining industry in BC. How we respond to the opportunities and challenges associated with these and other issues will determine the future of this industry in BC and in turn the well being of many British Columbians."
