Green Commitment

Special attention will be given to the sound environmental management of MEMO 2008. The use of disposable containers will be kept to a minimum, and recuperation of recyclable items will be facilitated. Both participants and exhibitors will be invited to commit to this initiative.

Conference Overview

Sudbury has long been recognized as one of the world’s most important mining areas. As the city and the mining industry evolve locally, the global influence is very noticeable within the local market. Obvious changes in recent years have been the change in ownership of INCO and Falconbridge to Vale INCO and Xstrata Nickel. More recent changes locally have been driven by a global downturn in nickel and base metal prices. But the service industry with many companies based in Sudbury and area has been recognized in recent years as being at the forefront of technology in a number of areas. With that recognition comes global demand for services.

The theme of the MEMO 2010 conference is "the new economy" which to the industry can mean many things. In many areas of the industry we are seeing a rebound in the strength of commodity prices, and the new economy provides hope for continuing improvement in the market and the industry. Within Sudbury there is a new economy, both in terms of operations and in terms of the services industry. But the new industry also means a renewed focus on environmental solutions, new and improved relations with First Nation partners, and a new and better understanding of the mining industry by the general public. Al Akerman, Co-Chair of the Conference said “ With renewed enthusiasm , the mining sector is poised to come out of this downturn in strong positions to deliver the metal and the associated supplies and service industry in Sudbury will continue to deliver and grow within this global market.” MEMO 2010 is all about promoting the industry not only within the industry, but to the general public and our future industry supporters, our youth. The Mining in Society show is aimed at introducing the industry to the local youth of Sudbury and area. Roy Slack, Co-Chair of the conference, said “The CIM has always been about promoting a positive image of our industry to the public. Introducing young people to the industry is a great way to increase public understanding to the importance of mining and its impact on our quality of life."

The technical presentations will be a mix of local, national, and international best practices. The tradeshow is always popular, and the October schedule will allow for a large outdoor equipment display as well as the traditional tradeshow.

Mark October 24 to 27th on your calendar and be in Sudbury for the 2010 MEMO conference, it is one conference you won’t want to miss.
