Greg Baiden is a professor at Laurentian University's School of Engineering, specializing in Robotics and Automation. He also serves as Chairman and Chief Technology Officer of Penguin Automated Systems Inc., a company formed to commercialize the technology developed under his leadership and provide consulting services to a variety of clients. For seven years, Dr. Baiden has also held a Canadian Research Chair in Robotics and Automation, which assisted in the development of many new mining robotic technologies - now being commercialized.

Dr. Baiden received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Mining Engineering at Queen's University, and his Doctorate at McGill University in Montreal. Prior to joining Laurentian, he worked for Inco Limited within the Mines Research Division and served as president of Automated Mining Systems Limited. From 1995 to 2001, he served as the head of Inco's Mines Research, where he was responsible for delivering new technologies and products to the mine environment. In 2001, Dr. Baiden left Inco as manager of Mines Research to join Laurentian University as a professor and researcher within the School of Engineering. He has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses and continues to supervise graduate students.

Dr. Baiden's research has targeted the remote control of multiple robots and remote machines for several diverse applications ranging from space to underground mining. He has earned international recognition for his work in telerobotics and mine automation.

Dr. Yassiah Bissiri is the Vice Chair of Research and the Senior Operations and Mathematical Modeling Specialist at Penguin ASI. Along with his roles at Penguin ASI he is also a Research Associate at Laurentian University where he teaches Machine Maintenance and Reliability along with Automation Engineering Dynamics.

Dr. Bissiri holds Mathematics and Physics degrees from West Africa as well as a Masters and PhD in Applied Science (Natural Resource and Mining) from the University of British Columbia (UBC). His research interests and specialties include but are not limited to: operations research on complex engineering problems; mathematical modeling, innovation and automation; intelligent systems; machine maintenance and reliability; applications of new methods for the advancement of the field of natural resources.

Dr. Malcolm Scoble has had a teaching, research and consulting career in mine design and planning as well as rock fragmentation and mining methods, including caving methods. He has been a mining engineering faculty member at three universities in his career: Nottingham University, McGill University and the University of British Columbia. In the 90s he was part of the Canadian initiative to develop mining automation applications within innovative mining processes and systems. A significant personal research focus in more recent years has revolved around the integration of sustainable development principles into research for new mining processes and healthy mining communities. His work often relies on strong interdisciplinary collaboration with universities, industry and communities. He is a professional engineer, a member of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and a life member of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (CIM).

Dr. Jacek Paraszczak is a professor and head of the Department of Mining, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at Université Laval in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. He is an executive member of the Maintenance/Engineering Division of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, and a member of the Order of Engineers (province of Quebec) as well as the Society of Mining Engineers (SME).

Dr. Paraszczak completed B.Sc.Eng. and PhD degrees in mechanical engineering at the AGH - Technical University in Krakow, Poland. Prior to joining the Université Laval in 1990, he worked in the mining equipment industry and subsequently at the university where he earned his degrees. His research interests are focused on mining equipment reliability, maintainability, performance and effectiveness, non-explosive hard rock excavation as well as materials handling. He has led and participated in several research projects in Canada, Poland and Finland. He has taught at all university levels and has supervised graduate students.

Len Kitchener graduated from the Michigan Technological University with a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering. Upon graduation he worked for Ingersoll-Rand Canada Ltd. as Sales Engineer and at the Great Lakes Paper Co. as Project Engineer before joining Inco Ltd. as Mines Research Engineer. At Inco he held the positions of Mines Equipment Engineer, Mines Equipment Supervisor, Senior Advisor Mines Research, and Senior Advisor Mines Purchasing. He retired from Inco after 33 years of service and is currently a consultant to the mining industry.

He is past APEO Sudbury Chapter Chairman, Sudbury CIM Branch Secretary-Treasurer and CIM Metal Mining Division Chairman. He is a past member of the CIM Mine Operators Committee, past Chair of the Maintenance Engineering Operators Committee and member of the Sudbury Mining Heritage Committee. He was awarded a CIM Fellowship in 1997 and received the CIM Members Award in 2001.

He is the author of numerous technical papers.

Allan Moss is a general manager at Rio Tinto’s Copper Group with responsibilities in cave design and operation. He is approaching 40 years of experience, the majority of which has been focused on underground mining. After graduating from Strathclyde University in Scotland he joined Goldfields of South Africa where he worked in gold and tin mining, moving for a period into consulting in South Africa and Canada prior to joining Rio Tinto in 1999. Over the last 10 years he has been heavily involved in all of Rio Tinto’s caving operations, from the implementation of the Palabora block cave in South Africa to technical and project reviews at joint venture operations such as Freeport’s DOZ Mine in Indonesia. He has written a number of technical papers on caving and is currently involved in teaching the principles of caving at the University of British Columbia.
