Sommaire: Canada doesn 't really have a tax system for mining —
it has eleven separate tax systems! The consequent maze adds some un-defmable margin of difficulty to making investment decisions in Canada. But, this maze is not likely to be simplified. Solution: learn it and sell it!

Sommaire: The factors constraining productivity in the mining of narrow vein ore deposits are numerous and often interdependent. This paper concerns mining techniques capable of reducing some of these constraints in the case of vein deposits whose dip is less than 45 degrees. Modifications of conventional mining methods as well as suggested new developments are presented, as are matters pertaining to the mechanization of operations as a mean of increasing both productivity and work safety.

Sommaire: General purpose uniprocessor systems used in control applications, however fast they may be, at a certain stage attain saturation, forcing the user or designer to consider other avenues for solving the problem. This paper gives a broad overview of multiprocessing with special reference to transputers. Virtually all aspects, from parallel systems real-time control to artificial intelligence (AI) and expert systems, have been highlighted. The application of transputers in unilayer and multilaye...

Sommaire: Aur Resources Inc. is the operator of the Louvicourt Mine located 40 km east of Val d'Or, Quebec. Les Entreprises Minieres Redpath Limitee, a member of the J.S. Redpath Group of companies, was contracted to construct two vertical mine shaft collars in deep overburden.
During the spring of 1991 two vertical shaft collars were established in wet, running sand that was in excess of 20 m deep. This paper will illustrate the engineering and construction techniques used in establishing these...

Sommaire: Future Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plants will have superior environmental performance and unmatched efficiency.
The Shell Coal Gasification Process (SCGP) is a clean coal technology, which can convert a wide range of coals into clean syngas for high efficiency electricity generation in an IGCC plant. SCGP flexibility has been demonstrated for feeds ranging from bituminous coals to lignites and petroleum coke, and the process is ideally suited for combined cycle power...

Sommaire: The profitability of an underground mine depends to a great extent on the production cost.
Random equipment failures and their consequences have significant influence on the total operating cost of a mining system. Having this in mind, a reliability study has been initiated for load-haul-dump machines in an underground mine. The main purpose of this study is to identify the critical machine subsystems, determine their failure pattern and help work out an effective maintenance strategy. In the...
