Sommaire: Those who Submit competing proposals for projects seek to present senior management with complete and fully supported material that will not fail under questioning. Hopefully, misleading notions and omissions will have been minimized and there will have been testing of the assumptions regarding the economic, social and political environments.
A capital project evaluation team can do management and itself a service by including a sound approach to the impact of inflation (and its twin problem,...

Sommaire: Any study in the field of theoretical investment analysis, or practical project evaluation, must be based on the assumption of one of the commonly applied models of time and value representation, and the corresponding interest convention. The lack of clear assumptions in this regard may easily confuse both the author of the study and the reader, and sometimes even lead to inaccurate results.
In the first part of this paper formal definitions of the continuous and discrete models of time and...

Sommaire: Implementation of an effective energy management system will reduce energy costs without impacting negatively on production.
The energy management system must be designed to complement the operation and be integrated with the organization. It must be reliable and easy to use but most important, it must have an accurate and timely feedback reporting system to allow the operation to take appropriate action.
Falconbridge Limited was one of the first three companies to be awarded the energy...

Sommaire: Zinc has been used for many years as a galvanic coating for the protection of steel. Electrochemical measurements show that zinc actually overprotects steel. The corrosion rate of DQSK (drawing quality semi-killed) steel in air saturated salt water was determined as a function of applied cathodic potential. The resulting data indicate that at a critical cathodic overpotential of - 0.725 Vsce an acceptably low corrosion rate of less than 1 mpy occurs. Using the developed criterion, alloys of...

Sommaire: Froth depth or interface level is an important control variable in column flotation which can influence both grade and recovery. A common method of locating the level is based on sensing the hydrostatic pressure at one or more points along the column. The level indicated can be in considerable error, largely because of variations in froth and collection zone bulk densities. A portable conductivity probe has been developed to detect the position of the interface from conductance measurements...

Sommaire: A corrosion survey was performed on ten selected H-piles which support a reinforced concrete wharf located at Trepassey, Newfoundland. Approximately 900 thickness measurements were taken at twelve different locations in each of four zones on the steel piles: the splash (atmospheric) zone, the intertidal zone, the low tide zone and the submerged zone. Results show that over the 20-year life of the wharf, corrosion has been most severe in the splash, low tide and submerged zones with average...

Sommaire: Mineral exploration in the Sicker Group, a belt of Paleozoic volcano-sedimentary rocks on Vancouver Island, has traditionally centred on auriferous polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits such as those currently mined by Westmin Resources Ltd. near Buttle Lake. Recently, however, the focus of exploration in the Sicker Group has shifted toward targets of structurally controlled gold concentrations, with notable success. Major north and northwesterly-trending structural features...
