Sommaire: This paper highlights some of the potential application areas of knowledge-based systems in the mining industry. The basic theoretical principles associated with knowledge-based systems are discussed and the justification for mining applications is given. The paper concludes with a brief description of a prototype knowledge-based system applied to scraper selection that was developed at Universite Laval on a LISP machine.

Sommaire: A computerized cost estimating program developed with the use of the Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet program has produced dramatic savings in preparing estimates for operating costs, equipment fleet size and manpower requirements for underground mines.
The program is used by Dynatec to support its consulting engineering projects, particularly feasibility studies. The 'first principles' approach is used to prepare detailed estimates under direct labour and supplies categories and maintenance costs for...

Sommaire: The Department of Mines and Energy is at present investigating the dimension-stone potential of the Nain anorthosite complex. These rocks are known to host occurrences of labradorite, a semiprecious gemstone known for its beautiful play of colours (chatoyance). Test blocks that contain 50/0 to 180/0 chatoyant labradorite were extracted from three prospects south of Nain. These have been slabbed and polished for further evaluation.
Second-grade labradorite stockpiled around the Grenfell quarry...

Sommaire: The software package described in this paper facilitates the handling of diamond drilling information in the creation and maintenance of a geological information database. Once entered, the drilling information is stored in a direct access file for rapid retrieval. The drill data are sorted into vertical cross sections and interpretation is performed using on-screen menus to define areas of common rock type and outline the mineralized zones. Intersections of individual zones can then be...

Sommaire: In a country with a cold climate like Canada, the cost of replacing worn parts of snowplow equipment, such as blades, is enormous. A great number of these blades, with different mechanical properties, are available, but few studies have been made to facilitate their selection according to the optimum ratio of wear resistance to cost. To attain this objective, laboratory tests have been developed to correlate test results with those obtained from various road service conditions. The test...

Sommaire: Within the Cariboo placer mining district, centred on the communities of Wells/Barkerville in central British Columbia, placer gold is recovered from unconsolidated Pleistocene glacial sediments. Production started in 1858; by 1861, Barkerville was the largest town north of San Francisco, California, and today the area is one of British Columbia's premier placer mining districts producing almost 30% of the province's placer gold output. Modern placer mining is focussed on small volume but...
