Sommaire: ANFO has two major disadvantages as an explosive low density and no water resistance. ANFO can be blended with more dense, water-resistant explosives to form "Heavy ANFO". The use of emulsion or slurry explosives as a matrix is an attempt to correct deficiencies on the basic ANFO while maintaining cost effectiveness.
This paper will deal with four main topics:

Product description, general properties, strengths and weaknesses.
Technology of "Heavy ANFO", the...

Sommaire: Resource development in northern Canada has special requirements which derive from the unique environmental and ecological nature of the northern environment. In this paper several case histories in which the Permafrost Research Section of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) has participated are used to illustrate how geophysical methods may be used to address some of these considerations. Although some of these examples were developed while examining problems directly related to oil and...

Sommaire: Since the publication of empirical cyclone models by Lynch and Rao in 1975 and by Plitt in 1976, the technical literature on this subject has consisted primarily of reports of applications, with only a few articles discussing basic modifications or enhancements in model form. In fact, most of the modelling effort in this period has been concerned with theoretical models based on the hydrodynamics of multiphase flow. (Preliminary resutls have been encouraging, however, it will be some time...

Sommaire: The Galfan alloy has been developed for continuous galvanizing of steel. The choice of the eutectic zinc-aluminum alloy with addition of mischmetal gives a coating with specific characteristics as far as structure, analysis, surface chemistry and surface morphology are concerned. The performance of the uncoated Galfan coating is superior when compared to conventional galvanized particularly for corrosion resistance and ductility. For coil coating applications, these two assets are of the...

Sommaire: The application of control theory in mineral processing is more difficult than in other industries because of the complex nature of the unit processes involved and because of problems with accurate on-stream measurement of process variables. Conventional control is based on proportional, integral and derivative functions of a continuously measured error term. Computer control can enhance these actions by incorporating logical routines to switch from one relationship to another. The success of...
