Sommaire: Three methods were tested for the beneficiation of aluminum scrap, generated by heavy medium separation of non-ferrous automobile scrap residue. These were: crushing in a shredder followed by screening; grinding in a ball mill followed by screening; and eddy current separation. The best results were obtained with the grinding-screening method.

Sommaire: Investors in flow-through shares are going to need an expanded road map to find their way through a growing maze of tax rules affecting such shares. Sommaire: The gas sorption and emission characteristic of coals are important to the planning and conduct of mining operations. Methane drainage from coal strata can also provide a supply of fuel in certain circumstances. Gas emissions have also created hazards during the handling and transport of coals and the release of gas also appears to be related to the yield of fine sizes during mining and processing operations.

Sommaire: Mineral deposits are where you find them; they have no allegiance to territorial boundaries. Over the past decade much of the new investment in mining has been outside of continental North America, let alone Canada. The larger Canadian Banks have pursued this offshore business through their multi-national organizations; this reflects both the increasingly international orientation of today's business environment, and to a degree, the competitive advantage of these offshore developments.

Sommaire: In cooperation with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, selected deposits of Potsdam sandstone in the Ottawa-Kingston area were core-drilled and evaluated by CANMET as potential glass and foundry sand. Analyses of cores ranged from 84.6 to 98.5% SiO2, 0.09 to 0.65% Fe2O3, and 0.07 to 2.10% Al2O3. The cores were largely composed of white to grey, relatively tough sandstone. Impurities included iron as pyrite, iron oxides and staining on the quartz grains; carbonates as calcite; and...
