Sommaire: A common practice in preventing gravity-fed tailing pipeline from plugging due to sanding is to add lime at relatively high dosage rates. The lime affects the rheology of the slurry "vehicle" which transports the coarser particles in a heterogeneous flow-regime. This paper describes a study of the effect of lime on the critical deposition velocities and friction head losses of Highmont Mining Company's mill tailing. Testwork using an extrusion viscometer was related to the surface...

Sommaire: The objective of this paper is to describe the potential impact of inter-provincial competition for new output capacity on the Canadian potash industry. It will be shown that the ramifications of such actions are potentially severe, especially since the potash industry is one of the few non-fuel minerals in which Canada purportedly possesses a significant degree of market power. More specifically, the paper addresses the impact of possible expansions in New Brunswick, Manitoba and, perhaps,...

Sommaire: Hat Creek coal was treated by the liquid solvent extraction process in a continuous plant at the U.K. National Coal Board Coal Research Establishment.
Extraction levels of over 80 per cent dry-mineral-matter-free (dmmf) coal were achieved. Total light oil yield was around 47 per cent of the dmmf coal. The light oil was shown to be a good feedstock for secondary refining into gasoline, jet fuel and diesel fuel.
In spite of the high mineral matter content of the coal the solid residue was...

Sommaire: In 1979 Chevron Standard Limited and Irving Oil Limited intersected a thick, high-grade sylvinite zone in the Windsor Group in the Chevron Irving Malagawatch No. I well in central Cape Breton. This well was the third and final hole of a program designed to evaluate a non-commercial oil discovery made by Chevron Standard's Mineral Staff in 1978 while carrying out base metal exploration. Nine holes were subsequently drilled to evaluate the significance of the potash discovery. The delineation...

Sommaire: A review is made of some of the principal factors and conditions that are, and will be, important to the over-all market climate for asbestos fibre and for the future of Canada's asbestos industry:— health hazard associated with asbestos exposure;— uncertain international regulatory environment for continued asbestos use;— adverse public reaction to asbestos;— product liability/litigation costs (U.S.A. primarily);— promotion of substitution by governments and...
