Sommaire: The paper examines the role of gravity concentration in both an historical context and within the modern mineral processing industry. It discusses the principles of the process on both a theoretical and practical level. The importance of more mineralogy and its effect on the choice of the wide range of equipment available is discussed. The paper concludes with a discussion on the relative merits of gravity concentration with other forms of processing.

Sommaire: Fifty years of wear on the original carbon steel shaft of this hydro turbine necessitated repair operations in 1980. Both aus-tenitic and martensitic stainless steels have been used individually as journal materials in separate trials on an 80-inch long and 22-inch diameter radial bearing but neither one nor the other has been successful.
The wear and cracking problems of the stainless steels leading to the present abandonment of both classes of stainless steel are described. In particular...

Sommaire: A sample of Hat Creek coal has been extracted using supercritical aromatic solvents in a laboratory-scale extraction unit. Extract yields in the range 21 to 27 per cent of dry-ash-free coal were obtained.
These yields are significantly lower than yields available from high-volatile bituminous coal and some lignites. Thus in a combined extraction/hydrocracking scheme for the production of liquid fuels from Hat Creek coal the char product would exceed that required to supply the energy and...

Sommaire: The separation of hematite fines (100% -38 pm) from quartz fines (100% -75 /j.m) was investigated using coarse hematite (-212 +150 /j.m) as a carrier in an oleic acid collector system. Oleic acid additions, per cent coarse additions, combined conditioning time and ferric chloride additions were examined.
It was found that carrier flotation is a dominant mechanism for fine hematite recovery at oleic acid levels greater than 200 g/t and coarse additions of 10 per cent. Hetero-aggregation is...

Sommaire: This paper describes the successful pilot plant testing of a flowsheet, developed at Inco Ltd. 's J. Roy Gordon Research Laboratory (JRGRL), for improved separation of the constituent minerals in a bulk copper-nickel concentrate.
The flowsheet utilized the fact that xanthate concentration on the mineral surfaces is the most important variable affecting the high lime separation and that reduction of the xanthate concentration could be affected by an oxidative conditioning stage.
When the...

Sommaire: A laboratory test program was initiated by the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources as part of the National Uranium Tailings Program to investigate the applicability of a radium-selective ion exchange complexer for removing radium from Canadian uranium mining effluents. The test program was carried out by Melis Consulting Engineers Ltd. under contract to the Department of Supply and Services using the Saskatchewan Research Council facilities located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
