Sommaire: Devices and flowsheets for recovering fine placer gold are reviewed. Inefficiencies of gravity processing techniques are documented and discussed. Prospects of combining gravity and froth flotation techniques are presented. Possibilities of using other separation techniques, such as magnetic and electrostatic devices are also discussed.

Sommaire: The Davy McKee combined mixer-settler (CMS), is a liquid-liquid contactor, which has been commercially applied to the recovery of uranium from dilute sulphuric acid-bearing leach liquors. CMS differs from most other solvent extraction systems in that the mixing and separation of the phases is carried out in the same vessel.

Sommaire: The largest Canadian Lamella thickener installation to date, with 13,600 square feel of effective clarification area, is being successfully operated at the Rocanville Division of the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan. This paper describes the operational principles and design features of the Lamella thickener, the testwork leading to its specification for the Rocanville phase two expansion project and a review of the performance of the full-size unit which was ultimately installed.

Sommaire: Commercial coal mining has been recorded in Nova Scotia since 1863 and during I his period an estimated 60,000,000 short tons of mine discard containing 10 to 30% coal has been accumulated. Approximately 70% of these dumps are in the Cape Breton region and most are owned by the Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC), formerly DEVCO.
The explosion of oil produced energy costs which created an increase in thermal coal demand as well as the desire to rehabilitate abandoned mine dumps...

Sommaire: As a monitor of the processes involved in the formation of granitoid mineral deposits the coherent group behaviour of the rare earth elements (REE) actively reflects changing fluid characteristics. For example, in the porphyry environment, magmatic-hydrothermal fluids produce potassic alteration with strong enrichment in the light rare earth elements (LREE), reflecting their high pH, low fluid/rock ratios, and the dominant role of Cl- complexing in metal (i.e. Cu, Au) transport. With...
