Sommaire: A test apparatus has been developed for obtaining the relations among confining stress, porosity and percolation rate for hydraulic sand backfills. The apparatus can also be used to evaluate internal drainage characteristics and the effects of partial saturation on percolation rates. The test apparatus, test procedures and typical test data are presented in this paper.

Sommaire: All ten Canadian provinces have now tabled their 1981/82 budgets. Only the provinces of Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia made more than minor modifications to their tax structures, with both Ontario and Quebec imposing major tax increases. In the past year, the federal budget was also released in the spring. Not so this year: we have that to look forward to in the fall! This month, Tax Notes presents a brief summary of the more significant tax changes introduced at the provincial levels in...

Sommaire: A fast, reliable and accurate method for radium-226 determination in environmental water samples has been devised, using an alpha spectroscopic technique. The correlation between barium-133 and radium-226 in the barium-radium sulphate precipitation mechanism was studied and in the limited experimental recovery range, the coefficient of correlation was r = 0.986. A self-absorption study for various barium carrier concentrations was also undertaken to obtain the least broadening of alpha energy...

Sommaire: To properly operate a mineral beneficiation plant it is often necessary to have systematic evaluations of the performances of apiece of machinery, of one of the processes or of the plant as a whole. The state of a process can be described from a collection of data: flow-rate values, particle-size distributions and chemical compositions of the various streams of the circuit studied. However, the obtained raw data are generally redundant and inconsistent from a material balance viewpoint, due to...

Sommaire: The behaviour of minerals during flotation of a fine-grained pyrite-rich base metal ore was investigated by studying the feeds, concentrate and tailings from every flotation cell in the mill of Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corp. Ltd., Bathurst, New Brunswick. The samples were analyzed for Zn, Pb, Cu, Fe, Ag, Sb, Sn, Bi, In, Hg, Mo and As. Mass balances were computed and recoveries of all metals from each cell, from each circuit and from the mill were calculated. The percentages of sphalerite...

Sommaire: The Cash is one of the largest porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits found in Yukon to date. It is 80 km northwest of Car-macks, within the unglaciated portion of the Dawson Range, and is associated with the Big Creek fault, an important tectonic feature. Part of the mineralized zone is blanketed by up to 70 m of alluvial drift. The remainder is covered by a relatively thin residual soil layer. The mineralized zone, however, was not detected by conventional stream-sediment sampling because...

Sommaire: Noranda's Lyon Lake property in the Sturgeon Lake area of Northwestern Ontario was staked by Mattagami Lake Mines Limited in May 1969 to cover airborne Input anomalies. Subsequent ground geophysical and diamond drilling programs resulted in the discovery of the Boundary Extension, Lake and Creek ore zones. As of December 31, 1978, ore reserves were estimated at 3,945,000 tons assaying 6.53 per cent Zn, 1.24 per cent Cu, 0.63 per cent Pb, 3.42 oz/ton Ag and 0.010 oz/ton Au. These deposits are...
