Sommaire: This paper discusses past and current energy use patterns in the mining and manufacturing sectors of the industrial minerals industry. Information is presented on the primary energy input types as purchased by the industry, the quality and form of the energy actually required by the various production processes, and the residual form of this energy, either embodied in the product or rejected in gaseous and liquid waste heat streams. With the continuing concerns about the availability of...

Sommaire: A review of instrumentation for the monitoring of radiation variables in the underground environment is presented. Several continuous monitoring systems, grab-sampling systems, personal dosimeters and time-integrating environmental monitors are discussed. The discussion is mostly restricted to instrumentation developed, used, tested or under contract by CANMET. The merits, disadvantages and main uses of the above instrumentation are indicated. The technical evaluations conducted by CANMET and...

Sommaire: The Fox Mine has been producing copper/zinc ore since 1970 at a rate of approximately one million tons per year, and until 1978 all production was derived from longhole open stapes. In June 1978, a trial slope using bighole mining methods was started to eliminate the development of two sublevels between 400 level and surface. The trial proved to be successful, and bighole mining is now an accepted mining method for both slopes and pillars at Fox Mine. When production blasting was started in...

Sommaire: Today's market for columbium has only developed in the last two decades, and in this sense it is "newer" than molybdenum, vanadium and most other steel alloying elements. In this short period, it has assumed a very important role in steel alloying and in superalloys. From a few hundred thousand pounds of columbium in 1960, consumption has grown to nearly 30 million pounds per year, with a market value approaching two hundred million dollars. To assess the outlook for columbium, we...

Sommaire: A recent pilot-plant program carried out at Rio Algom's Quirke uranium mine at Elliot Lake, Ontario is described. The goal of the research was the production of tailings basin effluents which were low in total radium-226. The process tested involved precipitation of radium with barium chloride and sedimentation in plastic-lined settling ponds. Adjustment of the tailings basin overflow from its normal value of pH9.5 by addition of sulphuric acid to about pH 7.5 was found to give approximately...
