Sommaire: During the early development of the Mattabi Mine in 1970, discussions with the Ontario Government revealed their policy of prohibiting, as much as possible, the development of new, isolated, single-industry townsites. Subsequently, Mattabi located its first housing in the Township of Ignace, which is situated 50 miles from the site of the mine and plant. Over 200 employees now commute 100 miles daily to and from work.
This paper describes the experience gained and discusses the advantages and...

Sommaire: Recent trends in Canadian mineral processing were reported in seven areas of interest covered by seventeen technical papers at the 1976 Annual Meeting of the Canadian Mineral Processors, held at Energy, Mines and Resources' Camsell Hall, Ottawa.
New milling equipment included the Enviro-Clear thickener, large-volume Outokumpu flotation machines and abrasion-resistant polyurethane screens.
Grinding experiences from a variety of milling operations were reported. Opportunities for increased...

Sommaire: A series of experiments were carried out in an effort to develop a universally applicable mathematical model of the hydrocyclone classifier. The design and operating variables studied were: cyclone diameter and height, the inlet, vortex^ finder and apex diameters, the feed pressure and the solids content of the feed slurry. The model consists of four basic equations which express the cut size (d*,o), volumetric split between overflow and underflow, volumetric throughput, and sharpness of...

Sommaire: Following the acquisition of grinding-circuit data at Brenda Mines Limited for simulation purposes, various methods to mass balance the circuit were evaluated. Unfortunately, different answers were obtained for different balancing methods. A data-adjustment procedure was therefore developed. The procedure assumes that all measured data are in error and finds adjusted values which satitsfy a "best-fit" criterion. A search is conducted with the minimum set of water masses and narrow size ranges...

Sommaire: Laboratory study of the behaviour of binary coal blends shows that coke strength is more closely dependent on the distribution of "reactive" oxygen in the parent coals than on their proximate, elemental or petrographic compositions, and it also appears possible to qualitatively predict coke strength from information about reactive oxygen.
Proceeding from, this recognition, experiments were carried out to test the possibility of preparing metallurgical cokes from binary blends in which...

Sommaire: Samples from seven test wells distributed throughout the surface-mineable area of the Athabasca Oil Sands have been evaluated to determine the amounts of heavy minerals present and the titanium and zirconium contents. The samples were treated to yield the size distribution of the titanium and zirconium minerals as well as their spatial distribution.
The study has shown that heavy minerals are found throughout the surface-mineable area; concentrations range from 0.24 to 2.29 per cent (by...

Sommaire: As the influence of governments has become -more widely felt, the use of research techniques to analyze policy has increased. Mineral economics, as one of the foundations of mineral policy research, has grown accordingly. Policy research and analysis has been carried out within governments, university departments and the private sector. Each of these institutional environments has characteristics which influence the topics of study, the approach, the methodology and the output of the...

Sommaire: The benefits of modern technology can readily be identified with energy availability. A clear correlation has been established between per-capita energy consumption and the GNP for various nations. The United States is an outstanding example of a nation which has benefited from vast energy reserves. The nation is now challenged, however, by dwindling reserves and the need to develop neiv sources consistent with the preservation of environmental quality. The development of new, virtually...
