Integration of environmental and engineering studies leads to effective and more efficient project delivery. The schedule for engineering studies (e.g., prefeasibility and feasibility stages) must align with environmental processes (e.g., environmental assessment, permitting, community engagement / consultation). If the engineering and environmental studies precede independently changes in the project design often pose a risk to project scope, cost and schedule. The environmental team must work with the engineering team to critically review the project description and identify any potentially significant issues from an environmental perspective. Similarly, the engineering team must be aware of environmental and social constraints and permitting timelines. Furthermore, community engagement / consultation forms a critical part of a successful project and must be initiated early, often ahead of environmental and engineering studies. This presentation will focus on effectively linking environmental, social and community engagement activities with engineering studies, as well as, examples where decoupling the studies has led to project delays and budget overruns.
