Embedding our Continuous Improvement “Green Day” methodology throughout the Potash Business Unit

Mosaic launched Continuous Improvement (CI) several years ago with the goal of enhancing capacity through projects focused on Maintenance Workflow, Execution, Asset Integrity and Reliability. The expectation was for local leadership teams to develop expertise in sustained follow-through on CI activities and to continually raise the bar on performance. Over time we have formalized our approach, creating a support function with CI professionals embedded in the operating units. We are entering our fourth year of upgrading an integrated methodology, combining the best of lean and behaviour based tools.
We tested and refined our approach on two sites before, during, and after extremely successful proving runs. We measured success using the unifying metric “Green Days”, which was defined at site level based on measures of safety, environmental performance, cost, productivity, and engagement. We have learned that success requires that senior leaders be committed to an operational excellence mindset, and are skilled in using both lean and behavioural tools to create alignment at the top, and engagement throughout the whole organisational structure.
We will share data and best practices for engaging line and functional leadership around a common approach to CI which engenders participation at all levels produces impact across all of our important operational metrics.
