Validation d’un recouvrement multicouche avec géocomposite bentonitique – cas du site minier abandonné New Calumet

Résumé L’activité minière a engendré de nombreuses aires d’accumulation de résidus miniers sur le territoire québécois. L’ancien site minier New Calumet a le statut de site abandonné et est actuellement restauré par l’État. Le site minier comporte trois aires d’accumulation de résidus miniers, soit l’aire A (7,6 ha), B (4,2 ha) et C (8,5 ha). Les résultats des campagnes de caractérisation indiquent que les résidus sont lixiviables à risque élevé et potentiellement générateurs d’acide. Les mesures in-situ de la qualité de l’eau de surface et souterraine montrent la présence d’un drainage neutre contaminé. La disposition des résidus miniers sur le site et les conditions hydrogéologiques en place ont mené à la sélection d’un recouvrement multicouche avec géomembrane bentonitique (GMB) comme méthode de restauration pour les aires B et C. Dans le processus d’approbation et de validation du concept proposé, une revue des données et des utilisations du GMB dans des contextes similaires a été effectuée de même que des essais en laboratoire. Ceci avait comme objectif d’évaluer la performance à long terme du recouvrement proposé pour les conditions de terrain spécifiques au site. Les essais en laboratoire ont permis d’évaluer l’impact combiné des cycles de gel-dégel et de mouillage séchage sur la conductivité hydraulique du GMB à court et long terme et l’effet de transfert ionique entre différents fluides et la bentonite.
