Risk Adjusted Cash Flows:
Discount Rates, Risk & Long Life Projects
The conventions we use for establishing risk adjusted discount rates for discounted cash flow evaluations are often working against what we are actually trying to do with risk. This presentation explains what these contradictions are and examines a different, but straightforward, approach to risk adjustment.
Larry Smith is Director of Project Evaluations & Strategic Analysis for Barrick Gold and has held similar positions with a number of mining companies as well as SNC-Lavalin. He is a mining engineer with over 35 years experience in project economic evaluations including scoping and optimization studies, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, risk assessment, and due diligence. He has published a number of papers on these topics. Larry teaches Mineral Economics as an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto, the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso in Chile and Schulich Business School Mining MBA program at York University.
