Jim Gowans, Co-president Barrick Gold  

Students - No Charge!

Students who have registered and do not attend without 24 hours prior notice to the event will be charged $20  Jim Gowans, a seasoned mining operator with four decades of industry experience, was appointed Co-President of Barrick in July 2014. He joined Barrick in January 2014 as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. As Co-President, Mr. Gowans shares overall responsibility for execution of the company’s strategic priorities and operating plans. 

 Mr. Gowans was previously Managing Director of Debswana, a joint venture between the Government of Botswana and De Beers SA. Before that, he was Chief Operating Officer of DeBeers SA, and Chief Executive Officer of DeBeers Canada. Mr. Gowans also has significant experience in the gold sector, having worked for eight years at Placer Dome, culminating in his role as Executive Vice President, Canadian Operations. He also held senior operating positions at PT Inco, where he was Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, and at Cominco (now Teck Resources Ltd), where he held the positions of Operations Manager for Potash Operations and General Manager of the Red Dog zinc mine.  

Mr. Gowans is a professional engineer with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mineral Engineering from the University of British Columbia.
