Canada's regulatory framework for radioactive rare earth process residuals - Project leader, Audrey Heppleston, MMS, NRCan
Canada's regulatory framework for radioactive rare earth process residuals (Project leader, Audrey Heppleston, MMS, NRCan) Virtually all REE deposits in Canada have thorium (Th) or uranium (U) content, which means that companies with plans to develop REE mining and processing operations must anticipate and manage the presence of radioactive waste. To support these efforts, it is essential that junior exploration companies understand the regulations with which their operations must comply.
The two main objectives of this project are:
- To identify and summarize all regulations in Canada that govern REE mining and processing where radioactive waste is generated as residual (waste) material.
- To prepare an up-to-date, useful guidance document for junior exploration companies planning to develop REE resources.
