Up, up, and away...

Ontario and Quebec taxpayers will have to dig deeper into their pockets to pay more tax, according to budget papers tabled in these provinces in May 1993. Individuals will be hardest hit, but corporations will also have to ante up in the face of higher rates, reduced deductions, and new taxes.

Summary: The jointed roof of underground mine openings in stratified rock can be analyzed in terms of a voussoir beam. Because of the essential indeterminacy of the structure, previous attempts of theoretically solving the equilibrium equation have been unsuccessful. Numerical analysis by the finite element method taking the geometrical and joint non-linearity into consideration combined with the experimental method has been adopted to study the performance of the voussoir beam. Deformation and...

Summary: The construction of large, high-power electric furnaces has been an important factor in the growth of electric smelting technology. New developments in the design and operation of electric furnaces have been spurred by the escalating cost of electric power and increasingly stringent environmental constraints. Key areas of progress include the application of high voltage to enhance furnace productivity; the installation of novel furnace cooling elements and robust binding systems to extend...

Summary: Documented underground fill failures have resulted because of the lack of adequate knowledge concerning fill strength and other physical parameters, as well as to a lack of consistent quality of fill materials being used by operators. On the basis of literature review and correspondence with backfill operators at 18 mines throughout the province of Ontario, non-systematic quality control procedures have been shown to exist, both within different levels of single operations and between...

Summary: Development of the final slope for the 340 m (1200 ft) high hanging wall at Cassiar Mine precipitated an area of deep seated instability involving an estimated 17.6 million tonnes. The deformation mechanisms involved squeezing of soft deformable serpen-tinite rocks in the toe which caused planar sliding and graben toppling of the stronger sedimentary rocks in the middle and upper sections of the slope. Although movement rates up to 150 mm/day were recorded, by understanding the controls on...

Summary: Although the measurement of blast vibration close to the blasthole is critical to the understanding of rock fragmentation mechanisms and blast damage in the rock masses, limited experience for such monitoring exists. Because much higher vibration amplitude and frequency ranges are expected in rock masses close to an explosive charge as compared to far field vibrations, different problems from those for the far field monitoring must be considered for near field blast vibration monitoring....

Summary: Kidd Creek Mines places approximately 10 000 tonnes of consolidated rockfill on a daily basis. Consolidated rockfill is comprised of shed aggregate mixed with different ratio and amounts of binders. Consolidated rockfill, with closely controlled specification, is employed for subsequent pillar recovery and improved passive/active ground support. With the same amount of cementing agents consolidated rockfill mass yields a higher, compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, cohesion, and angle...
