Summary: An experimental program has been carried out by the Australian Atomic Energy Commission to compare the effectiveness of Caro's acid as an alternative oxidant to pyrolusite in the leaching of uranium ores from the Alligator Rivers region of northern Australia. Batch leaching tests on Ranger, Nabarlek, Koon-garra and Jabiluka ores showed that uranium extraction was unaffected by choice of oxidant, but that Caro's acid reduced acid requirements by 15 - 25%. Lime requirements for neutralization...

Summary: Operating heavy equipment in Labrador, where the winters are 8 months long and the temperature frequently drops below -40°F (-40°C) for days and sometimes weeks presents unique problems in both the operation and maintenance functions.
Winterization programs must be well designed and implemented at the proper time. These programs must include the proper selection of fuel oil, engine oil, hydraulic oils, greases, cooling system fluids, etc. More often than not, modifications have to be...

Summary: The Polaris mining operation (Fig. 1) is located on Little Corn-wa/lis Island in the Canadian Arctic, an area with a very limited shipping season and a hostile climate. The operation consists of the underground works, barge-mounted concentrator facilities, concentrate storage and shipping facilities, a personnel accommodation complex and an airstrip.
The electrical energy for the operation is provided by four 2.3 MW diesel-generators installed on the barge. The power is distributed through a...

Summary: The results obtained from the study of soil geochemistry in 14 test areas as well as along six regional traverses clearly indicate that there are important variations in the trace-element content of the A1 soil horizon developed on glacio-lacusthne sediments. The observed dispersions are in all probability attributable to the same sources which are responsible for the anomalies in the groundwaters and the basal till.
Of the fourteen test areas chosen, thirteen are clearly anomalous in the...
