Balance ropes in service

Abstract In recent years, there has become a growing interest toward a better understanding of balance rope behaviour. With this in mind, the author will present a comprehensive summary of field experience, as wejl as conclusions. In presenting this overview, it is the intent to stimulate further interest as well as provide a framework from which further in-depth investigation can be initiated.
Topics which will be covered include rope cores, lubrication practices, loop dividers, rope failures, etc.
Keywords: Equipment, Maintenance, Balance ropes, Rope cores, Lubrication, Loop dividers, Rope failures, Rope installation

Summary: This paper will cover recent developments in conveyor applications with specific reference to capacities, belt speeds and distances. It will also discuss certain unique arrangements of horizontal, curved and loop belt systems. In addition, the recent changes in safety factors resulting from new conveyor construction methods will be reviewed.

Summary: The paper identifies functional areas which frequently can yield significant productivity improvement. Emphasis is placed on the repair and maintenance, material supply and training functions. Successful approaches are discussed in some detail, and typical results which have been achieved are reviewed.

Summary: The production of heavy water, the moderator in a CANDU reactor, is examined following a flow sheet of a typical Canadian plant. The process involves the extraction and concentration of deuterium from natural water through a chemical exchange mechanism with hydrogen sulphide. Consequently, corrosion problems associated with sour environments — the use of hydrogen sulphide — are an everyday problem and have led to the development of a highly refined materials selection and testing...

Summary: The Maybrun copper deposit is in a succession of pillowed basaltic flows in the Wabigoon sub-province, northwestern Ontario. The rocks have primary flow morphologies and remarkably well-preserved crystallization textures, including quench-textured plagioclase, in spite of metamorphism to the amphibolite fades. The sulphide assemblage chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-cubanite with minor sphalerite and pyrite is primarily in interpillow spaces and is stratabound. Basaltic rocks immediately enclosing the...

Summary: "I would be a rich man if I had a dime for every manhour spent by the bureaucracy on changing tax legislation." Anonymous.
The mind of a cynic might very well conjure thoughts about "change for the sake of change", given the protracted saga of federal sales tax reform in Canada. The latest chapter unfolded this summer when the Commodity Tax Review Group released its important report. Whatever sales tax changes, if any, are finally adopted will have profound effects on many...

Summary: Cost per ton as it relates to mobile underground vehicle maintenance and repair is invariably astronomical. The reason: the mechanic replaced a ten micron filter with a 250 micron filter because it appeared to be physically identical; the purchasing agent bought "Brand X's" filter because it was 25% cheaper—the result, a filter life 30% less; the hydraulic pump was sent for repair at a cost of $2000.00 and failed shortly after installation; pumps are failing because there is...
