Hydrometallurgical pumps - materials and design

Abstract The paper provides a comprehensive discussion of pump selection for the hydrometallurgical industry. Material suitability, in addition to proper size and design, will provide extended life for pumps in erosion/corrosion service.
Keywords: Hydrometallurgy, Pumps, Corrosion, Erosion, Sulphuric acid, Hydrochloric acid, Castings.

Summary: The original flowsheet of the TANCO mill consisted of a simple two-stage gravity circuit for the recovery of the tantalum concentrates. With decreasing grade and grain size of the tantalum minerals, considerable modifications to the circuit have been required. This paper discusses the various recent improvements carried out on all stages of the flowsheet, which have resulted in a 10% increase in recovery. Future improvements, including on-stream analysis, and the possibility, of tantalum...

Summary: To pollute means to make impure or unclean. We tend to forget that man defecates, urinates, sweats, expectorates and exhales and in himself is a beastly little pollutor—but then so is Mother Nature! The object of this paper is to try to put what man and nature do into perspective. The facts indicate that although man may sweat a little, Ms. Nature is by far the greatest pollutor of all.

Summary: The stability of a rock mass is influenced by the presence of discontinuities. In assessing stability, it is required that one should know the frictional and cohesive properties of these contained weaknesses. In the study performed by the authors, a number of samples of diamond drill core containing open discontinuities were tested in shear. The results obtained were compared with values which resulted from back analyses of instabilities in the field.

Summary: The increased emphasis on the efficient utilization of capital and mineral resources has led to several new advances in the science of mineral separation. One example of a recent development is the application of high-capacity high-intensity wet magnetic separators to fine hematite recovery by a leading Canadian iron ore producer. The iron ore recovery feasibility, flow-sheet development, circuit operation and metallurgical performance are reviewed.

Summary: A corrosion-resistant lining is, quite often, selected on the merits of its corrosion resistance only. This paper demonstrates the effects of temperature, pressure, weather, design aspects and variances of physical properties within the scope of the generic designation of a corrosion-resistant material or materials. The base for the study is a rubber- and brick-lined steel vessel, with unchanged chemical conditions. Graphs and sketches illustrate the various effects of physical influences on...

Summary: Manitoba has now joined Ontario and Quebec in providing for new incentives and lower tax rates for the mining industry. A single rate of tax (to replace the former two-tier royalty), an investment tax credit and a relatively straightforward set of rules for calculating taxable mining profits are the main features of new mining tax legislation announced by Manitoba's Finance Minister Donald W. Craik in his May 15, 1979 budget address. On introducing amendments to reform The Metallic Minerals...
