Production of High Purity Iron by the Floating Zone Method

A simple, easily constructed apparatus suitable for the zone refining of iron and other reactive materials is described. After eight passes at one inch per hour, the iron produced showed a marked drop in hardness to 49 Brinell. In addition, an arbitrarily - defined recrystallization temperature was lowered by about 35°C and the rate of grain growth greatly increased.
