Sudden Release of Ground Stresses in the Coal Mines of Western Canada

IT HAS BEEN SAID, with good reason, that the future of the coal mining industry, in our mountainous regions at least, depends on ability to extend operations successfully to depths greater than those reached until now. However, ,at many points, Nature has given definite hints that trespassing there could be fraught with very unpleasant possibilities, unless the intruder be governed by a series of rigidly observed principles.
