Automatic Mine Pumping With Off-Peak Power

IN 1932, the No. 4 shaft at Wright-Hargreaves mine was completed to a depth of 4,000 feet, and the lowest operating level at that time was at 3,900 feet. It was realized that the existing pumping system, using triplex plunger pumps at somewhat irregular depths in the mine, would be inadequate to take care of the increasing volume of water that would have to be handled as mining operations expanded.
