Addressing Challenges with International Standards for the Rare Earths Elements Industry
CIM Vancouver 2016
Mr Ian M.London (Chair - Canadian Rare Earth Elements Network (CREEN))
Canada, due to its rich rare earth deposits, its mining and mineral processing expertise, and its record of successful resource development, is well positioned to profit from demand in rare earth elements. However, while the potential is huge, the challenges are daunting. A new Technical Committee initiated by China under the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has the potential to address some of those challenges. The ISO Rare Earths Technical Committee, led by China, will be developing international standards for the full life cycle of rare earths and Canada will be at the table helping set the standards. This presentation will provide details about the ISO Rare Earths Committee and the topic areas likely to be standardized, how Canada will participate through a Canadian Mirror Committee of expert stakeholders, the objectives Canada has for the output from this technical committee, and the potential benefits for the international and domestic rare earths elements industry.
