An Industrial Alliance for Rock Fragmentation Analysis in a Matter of Seconds

Achieving optimal rock fragmentation from blasting translates to improved productivity in mines. This would only be possible if one can accurately sense the rock fragmentation in the bench face. In the past three decades, image-based analysis methods have been applied by blast engineers. These techniques typically use a reference object of known size to convert image coordinates (pixels) to real world coordinates (inches). However, using a reference object introduces inaccuracy, inconvenience and safety concerns.
This presentation introduces a new technology to improve safety and efficiency of rock fragmentation analysis. This technology employs a 3D imaging sensor in a portable device. The system captures three dimensional coordinates of the scene and combines it with the delineated rock boundaries in the 2D image to generate accurate rock size estimates and size distribution. Consequently, the need for a reference scaling object or marker is eliminated. This data collection method also removes safety concerns and relaxes camera viewing angle constraints. This presentation outlines the system’s architecture and presents a variety of field data from our collaborations with Orica at both mines and quarries. The field results indicate more accurate rock fragmentation sensing and improved measurement consistency across different users in comparison to conventional methods.
