Heat Loads and Cooling at Laronde

The Laronde mine is currently the deepest mine in North America. Due to its depth and high degree of mechanization, it has had to resort to cooling in recent years. This paper presents heat loads at the Laronde mine and a very simple method that was used to determine them. The heat loads are broken down into various sources such as diesel, fans and strata. A method to estimate future heats loads and cooling needs is also presented and compared to results obtained from modeling. Accurately assessing current heat loads is critical to planning for future expansions into even hotter environments.
