DEVELOPING AN INTERACTIVE, COLLABORATIVE VIRTUAL UNDERGROUND MINE TO SUPPORT MINE EMERGENCY RESPONSE EXCERCISES

Using Unity 3D as a collaborative multi-user virtual on-line environment, an interactive virtual underground mine platform (IVUMP) is being developed to provide on-line access to mine safety preparedness training with a focus on mine emergency response exercises (MEREs). Communication and information flow among MERE participants and their actions can be monitored, recorded and evaluated. A mine ventilation simulation utility VFIRE is being incorporated to enhance the realism and interactive nature of the ‘in-world’ exercises as well as extend its functionality to include training in real-time ventilation and fire control.
