INVESTIGATION OF SUITABILITY OF PB-ZN MINE TAILINGS FOR SURFACE PASTE DISPOSAL

World Mining Congress
The mining industry in Turkey has been developing in the last 10 years. Mine wastes and tailings have thus been increasing, depending on the rising production rates. There are many problems related to accidents that occur in tailings damps. In this study, the applicability of the surface paste disposal (SPD) method for a Pb-Zn mine in western Turkey was examined. Density was 3.084 and specific surface area was 0.899 m2/g. The mill tailings have very low plasticity and show characteristics of clays and silts in terms of the Unified Soil Classification System. The particle size distribution of the tailings was 39.2% particles finer than 20 μm. The results of this study showed that the physical and chemical properties of mill tailings make them suitable for SPD.
