Implementing Safe Production at Agnico-Eagle’s Kittila Mine

CIM Montreal 2011
Abstract The Kittila mine is Agnico-Eagle’s first producing mine outside of Canada. Located above the Arctic Circle, approximately 900km north of Helsinki in Finland, the Kittila mine produces 3000 tpd from a combination of open pit and underground operations. This is also the first deposit where Agnico is implementing technology to process refractory ores. This paper discusses the project development and merging of cultures as Agnico-Eagle strives towards its’ goal of Safe Production. In an area of Finland where mining has been less active in the last few decades, training and risk assessment are key aspects to ensure that personnel with no experience of mining are able to work safely and productively. This becomes even more important as, over the next few years, the mine transitions from producing mainly from the open pits to becoming a fully underground operation.
