Agnico-Eagle - Meadowbank Mine; Environmental Challenge North of 60

CIM Montreal 2011
Abstract The Meadowbank Gold Mine is Nunavut’s newest mine, entering production in March 2010. The Mine is located 75km north of the community of Baker Lake and experiences extreme arctic winter conditions. The mine will produce on average 350 000oz per year from 3,6 Moz of reserves from 3 open pits.
The Meadowbank Operations were built in the Nunavut Tundra with surrounding lakes to dam, dewater and monitor. This paper discusses how Agnico-Eagle met the many challenges associated with permitting and monitoring in a timely fashion, including how the high number of parameters defined in various permits and licenses were managed.
