ONE INDUSTRY VOICE TOWARDS ESABLISHING COMPATIBLE TECHNOLOGY SYSTEMS

CIM Vancouver 2010
Abstract The expanding use of computing and network technology systems in the mining industry on large mining equipment and for mine control systems has been beneficial for equipment uptime and productivity improvements, but has also created challenges. While suppliers continue to provide powerful technology solutions that are delivering increased performance, the solutions are often proprietary, incompatible and unnecessarily costly to integrate, use and support at the operational level.

To address this opportunity, the Surface Mining Association for Research and Technology (SMART) established a users group called “One Industry Voice” in support of Connectivity and Technology Standards for the Mining Industry. The participants identified the key and common issues that have prevented the effective deployment and use of technologies at their sites. Proposed solutions are based on the belief that suppliers should embrace and utilize “open” technologies in their products. Mining Industry firms see it as imperative that the suppliers recognize the critical importance of having the ability and flexibility to access, gather, and use all system data and information seamlessly to improve and optimize mining operations.

Operators, Equipment Manufacturers and Technology Providers are invited to participate in a session that sets the foundation for the Mining Industry taking the next step towards effective technology application.
