A Review of Current Rapid Mine Drifting & Tunnelling at Selected Mines & Civil Projects Around the World

CIM Toronto 2009
Abstract Some mine managers believe that despite new technology and equipment availability, mine drifting is encountering reduced advance rates. This could be a serious threat to the drill & blast mining method and maybe even mechanical rock excavations.

In contrast to these mining industry trends, the construction industry has purchased all available equipment and is achieving record advance rates. This occurred in spite of tougher restrictions imposed on tunnel-builders regarding health & safety and more flexible labour force conditions.

This paper highlights conditions at several mines and construction sites globally, including a summary of best practices used to achieve the discovered results.
