Abstract Since 1999, when paste fill started to be used underground, Brunswick Mine had to deal more often with material that oxidized and emitted S02, building up, along the way, experience that helped convince the management to reopen an area abandoned for thirty years, following the oxidation of sulphide rock fill. To do so, possible outbursts of S02 had to be considered and proper mitigation had to be in place to ensure safety of the workplace at all times. Production resumed in 2005 and since then, S02 was encountered on some occasions. This paper describes the resumption project and highlights the lessons learned in dealing with S02.
