Agglomeration mechanisms in industrial balling devices

Abstract Iron ore pelletizing necessitates the agglomeration of ground particles, in which mechanisms are closely related to balling productivity and green ball quality. A method was developed at COREM in order to observe the mechanisms occurring in industrial balling devices. Sampling campaigns were performed in various pellet plants to visualize the genesis of green ball formation. This was done through the use of a coloured tracer (fluorescent pigment) mixed to the fresh feed. Pellets from the balling unit discharge were sampled, cut and illuminated under UV-light in order to excite the pigment bearing material. Using this method, the impact of the circulating load on the balling mechanisms was set forth.
