Abstract Northparkes Mine, a Rio Tinto copper/gold subsidiary located in Central NSW, Australia, undertook an extensive market survey in 2004 to find a solution that would quantify and improve their understanding of underground mining and surface processing operations. By measuring the process, they better understand how they perform against budgets and targets. This knowledge and information helps to focus on how and where to improve their business. Sustained long term measurement and plant performance recording, combined with an improvement and review process will lead to significant value.

This presentation will discuss the need for a continuous improvement program focused on alarm management, control loop performance assessment, downtime and production reporting and the lessons learned at Northparkes Mine based on a solution implemented by an experienced team using standard products.
