De Beers, the Diamond Industry and Canada: Diamond Production and Marketing Developments and Highlights

Abstract Sinced WWII there has been increasing international diversification in the sources of diamonds, and Botswana has risen to be the largest producer by far. Over the past ten years Canada has emerged from obscurity to a leading position among diamond producers. Worldwide consumer consumption of diamond jewellery has been democratised and internationally diversified. Advertising by De Beers has created markets for new products in new countries, and rising consumer disposable income has propelled Asia forward. This paper examinines some of these trends, and some of the factors that explain why the future of the diamond industry is not what it used to be.
